this is a living trail, not a finished map
The Greening is a living network for people making the crossing — building real community through conscious play and inner coherence, in actual places, with actual humans. You found it. Or it found you. Either way, welcome.

How do you learn to fly? You aim at the ground, and... somehow miss
That's not a joke. That's the instruction. The thing you're trying to do cannot be accomplished by trying to do it. The thinking mind, aimed directly at the problem, overshoots every time — because the solutions we most need right now are structurally invisible to the mind operating inside the problem. The mind cannot see what it cannot yet conceive. Play creates the conditions where conception becomes not just possible but inevitable.
We all, somehow, forgot this. Stuart Brown spent decades documenting play across species and found something crucial to our current moment: play is not rest, not reward, not recreation. It is the primary mechanism by which mammals develop the capacity to respond to situations they have never encountered. Play-deprived animals don't just miss out on fun: they lose the behavioral flexibility needed to navigate anything genuinely new.
We have been play-deprived at civilizational scale for a very long time. The cost is this: you forget who you actually are. You learn to live in a tiny sweaty closet in the giant infinite mansion of your true self, and you learn to call that closet your whole life. The performing becomes the person. The managed presentation becomes the identity. And then one day the world asks you to do something genuinely new and you find you've forgotten how.
You can't play hide and seek in a closet. Play, by its nature, requires you to leave, ezplore, expand out. The thermodynamic reality: systems in transition need fuel or they collapse to a lower order. Genuine shared joy isn't a reward for doing the hard work. It's what makes the hard work possible. A movement running on adrenaline and grief burns out. A movement running on genuine shared joy metabolizes the chaos and routes the energy somewhere real.
The global challenge is not asking you to sacrifice yourself to a cause. It's wanting to hand you back the life you actually wanted. The one where you know your neighbors, where your hands make real things, and where you are genuinely needed by people who genuinely know you. The disaster is the permission slip. The capacity to imagine and enact something genuinely new was never gone. It was waiting for conditions where it could safely emerge: in the body, in the nervous system, in the gene expression that shifts when a room stops performing and starts playing.
Do you want your kids and grandbabes to be human or a robot in the matrix? Dearest mammal, the whole giant real life story needs you to pick up your pen again and start writing the true story of humanity — one dance, one genuine conversation, one hike, one tree climb at a time.
Just as humans thrive, one in-breath and one out-breath at a time, so does this project of rehumaning, remembering how to become whole together in the outer world and how to play/evolve/heal our interior worlds, together.
Here's a calendar of gatherings, & a Greenhouse of inner material you wander to when you want to deepen, heal, understand, become more.
The whole game is to quit treating them as two separate skills and start playing them as one moving thing, sliding out of a real conversation into whatever it loosened in you that night and back out again without dropping the thread. Inner and outer coherence.
Everything is intergenerational and free. Free to offer, free to receive, on purpose, because we wanted to find out who we are without price tags.

Every gathering holds to one standard, Good for All: does it leave everyone more themselves and the bonds between them stronger? That's relational infrastructure, community rebuilt one potluck at a time, free and intergenerational, the eight-year-old and the eighty-year-old in the same circle.

Go Within
Most of what runs a life runs underground, in the patterns and the old charge and the stories you never agreed to but have been living inside of anyway, the 99.99% of you that no one can see because we are only .01% matter. Inner growth is the hinge the whole visible world swings on. The Greenhouse invites you into that 99.99%, to become more effective and honest and joyful in the life before you. What's offered here is designed to evoke and echo-locate your own quiet inner wisdom that you maybe haven't heard in a while. Same Good for All standard as the gatherings, free, the door is round open.
who tends this
Islands of coherence, made by hand for two decades.
Natalie Kinsey built her first intentional community at twenty-two, a single mother making the container her family needed because the institutions meant to hold it didn't. That was the start of more than twenty years of the same work under changing names: play facilitator mentored by Bernie DeKoven, family and group coach, founder of intentional communities, always working the fringe where the next thing forms first. When Helene tore through Western North Carolina, the communities built through this work didn't scatter; they organized, fed people, held each other through it, and what had looked like play and philosophy turned out to be infrastructure. The Greening is that same work grown to the size of a movement: islands of coherence, still made by hand.
